Top 11 tips on how to green your marketing

GPM Network has worked with many businesses to promote their environmental credentials. Click here for examples of our work.

Here are the top 11 tips as a result of that experience:

1. Keep it real – don’t be tempted to exaggerate or over gloss your environmental claims as the chances are you’ll be found out!

2. Bundle your benefits – most people will only buy a green product or service when other factors, such as quality and price are in place.

3. Distinctive messaging – rise above the noise and let your message be heard, by making it distinctive and relevant to your target audience.

4. Tell people about the impact –don’t promote, but inform customers of the impact of your environmental activities. It’s more meaningful.

5. Media choice – consider electronic communications as opposed to printed material to reduce your use of paper.

6. Green by design – green marketing must start at product/service design stage.

7. Plan effectively – businesses that plan better, make better use of resources.

8. Target rather than blanket – a more targeted approach will allow you to tailor your message, making it more efficient.

9. Price realistically – for most customers there is a limit on charging a “green” premium, this varies between product and price ranges.

10. Create green narratives –use word-of-mouth communication, rather than big advertising campaigns: it’s more trust-worthy and effective.

11. Walk the Talk – make sure other areas of your business also follow good environmental practice.

Nice one - I would add "be bold" - we don't need to be apologetic or soppy in green branding - it can be funky and upbeat rather than hairshirt.
