Gareth Kane Book Reviews: Hot, Flat & Crowded and The God Species

I don't tend to read many "green" books these days - not because I think I know it all, but because I'm topping up my knowledge everyday simply by doing my job, so sitting down in the evening and opening a weighty tome at p1 is less than appealing. However, I had heard a lot about these two titles so I read them back to back. Gareth Kane I need your pearls of wisdom!

The last two Christmases I have published "Pearls of Wisdom" - short compendia of wise words on CSR/green business/corporate responsibility compiled from contributors to The Green Executive. I intend to do the same this year but, in lieu of the book interviews, would like to crowd source some contributions.

What I need are 1 or 2, maximum 3 sentences giving a real insight for…

Gareth Kane How to debate with a climate "sceptic"

I've just entered and won my second battle with a climate "sceptic". After the bruising experience of the first win (with an Emeritus Professor), I thought I would take a more intelligent approach. It worked, so I thought I would share.

The standard "sceptic" tactic is to bombard you with a barrage of nonsense to debunk - everything from the survival rates of polar bears to whether ice is melting on Mars. Most of this is irrelevant, cherry picked or simply made up and it…

Carolyn Johnson Beware the Greenwash! Tesco, Boots and Subway accused of selling unethical tuna...

The Ecologist has reported that research shows high street chains using "dolphin-friendly" claims on cans of tuna are misleading customers about the damage to other marine wildlife, including turtles. Boots, Greggs, Tesco and Subway are amongst those selling huge quatities of tuna caught using environmentally damaging fishing methods.

Today the London Evening Standard reported outrage as BP chief executive, Tony Howard, claimed that the recent spill, off the southern tip of Louisiana (which left 17 workers injured, 11 missing and 200,000 galleons of crude oil a day leaking into the Gulf of Mexico), was "relatively tiny".

The current size of the Deepwater Horizon spill is hard to measure exactly, but attempts have been made to estimate it. Click here to…

Gareth Kane Book review: Confessions of a Radical Industrialist, Ray Anderson

This book seemed to take an age to get published in the UK, and I had it on pre-order as soon as I knew it was coming as, in terms of green business leadership, Ray Anderson is the Guv'nor. His company, Interface, is the least likely champion of green business that you could imagine - they are the world's biggest manufacturer of carpet tiles, made from oil-based chemicals using huge amounts of energy and producing tonnes of toxic waste - if they can do it, anyone can.

Anderson first… Continue

Gareth Kane Watch Again: Climate Change and Business Success webinar

The climate change and business success webinar was a great success yesterday. Deborah Carlson of the Suzuki Foundation kicked off with the case for cost reduction and staff engagement. I followed that up by looking at new and emerging business opportunities in the low carbon economy. Good questions too - some really stretching my geographical knowledge!

If you weren't one of the 120 participants, you can… Continue
