May 12, 2009 from 9:30am to 5pm

If a local authority is to achieve the annual 2% to 4% carbon reduction goal required of it by the National Performance Framework Indicators it must develop an…See More

Hi Mike - welcome to the network.

Hopefully this will build up over the next few days (only day 2 really). Fell free to add an event, discussion, write a comment on other people's pages and of course invite other like-minded people to join the network.

Hi Mike - in the short term the aim is to simply develop a means for an environmental sector to develop a network - enable them to share ideas and collaborate on mainly business issues. Since the demise of the Environmental industries Federation there has been no means of people meeting up to develop new contacts or existing relationships. In the medium term we will have to expand these aims but based on the feedback we get - I personally think there is a need for a body to represent the sector in the region and link academia with environmental industries. But it depends what the group priorities are. I'll be working hard to do introductions but am not precious about this group either - if there's not the demand then it will not be sustained.

In some ways I am hoping it will grow like a bio-culture in a Petri dish - a bit like most fo the social networks around.

Tenth of the way there!

We now have 10 Climate Change Councils confirmed – one tenth of our target, which is a great achievement over the summer season and we don’t start till next month!

We have another 30 in the pipeline waiting for people to get back together to finalise their decisions - so we are in a great place and we still need more connection with hosting organisations.

Of course there is a big difference between having 10 confirmed and actually holding 100 Climate Change Councils, but I have learned to be patient and let the sequence unfold. Like growing a great oak tree, you have to start with a little acorn, there is no other way.

I am still inspired by the story of Rebecca Hosking whose successful anti-plastic bag campaign in Modbury, South Devon, led to much awareness and action including the national retailer activity in supplying reusable bags. This was one little acorn that has grown.

Imagine what would have happened if the Government had told us to stop using plastic bags! Have you noticed how we tend to resist doing what someone else tells us to do, even if it might be in our best interests?

But when we come together and explore the issues with our collective wisdom then we decide what is needed and what we want to do about it. So I am seeing each Climate Change Council as a little acorn with the potential to have a massive effect on climate change.

I'm intested in any connections people have that might be interested in hosting a Climate Change Council or sponsoring one or more.
