David Cameron has pledged to make the coalition the "greenest
government ever" and announced that all ministerial departments
must cut their carbon emissions by 10% over a 12-month period.
He explained: "That has to be done, you're going to drive it, you
are going to lead it.” Individual departments' energy use will be
published in real time, and this transparency is hoped to drive
forward the cuts in carbon emissions. It has been described as a
new way of doing climate change and a new way of doing
politics.
Visiting the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), now
fronted by Liberal Democrat Chris Huhne, Mr Cameron promised to
place the green economy, climate change and energy security at the
heart of his "agenda" for the ministry.
He said: "We've got a big, big opportunity here, I want us to be
the greenest government ever. It's a very simple ambition and one
I'm absolutely committed to achieving. "The three things I would
pick out are first of all the green economy; we've got a real
opportunity to drive the green economy, green jobs, green growth
and make sure we have our share of the industries of the future.
Clearly there's the climate change agenda where we have got to get
back on track both nationally and internationally, and third there
is the issue of energy security which I think is vitally important
and I think we need to do a huge amount of work on."
This announcement follows a historic win for the Green party in
last week’s general election, in which Green party leader and MEP,
Caroline Lucas, saw off Labour by 1,300 votes, to take the Brighton
Pavilion constituency.
As well as environmental priorities, the Green party makes promises
such as cutting road speed limits, decriminalising cannabis and
greatly increasing duties on alcohol, tobacco and air travel.
