I've just turned down the "opportunity" to speak at a large commercial conference as they're not paying speaker fees. My logic is that I rarely get work out of such events and the organisers are raking in sponsorship and entry fees on the back of the speakers' knowledge and experience, so what's in it for me?
I'd be interested in members views - is public speaking a PR exercise, a business opportunity or both?
